advice on new board set?

Post by skan »

Hello

I'd like to buy a go set. (Around 70$, wooden and glass, medium quality one, it would motivate me more). I'm a beginner.

I have several doubts, Should I buy...
... a folding board because is easier to store it and carry it?, or the one-piece board because is much nicer and doesn't get disassembled when playing?.
... a reversible one (with 9x9 on the other side) or just a 19x19 with legs because is much more beautiful and I'll never play 9x9?

Do glass (the store has Korean stones) stones break too easily when they fall to the floor?, Are Yunzi ones better?

I guess I'll keep it at home most of the time.

thanks

Whither glass or yunzi, both can still break if dropped. As far as a fold-able or whole board? If you think you will be carrying the board around with you try a fold-able one. If you are thinking of taking it down to the coffee shop once a week, having a one piece board really wouldn't be so inconvenient. As far as if it should be 9x9 or 19x19 etc.... I personally never use the 9x9 and 13x13 reversible board I have unless I am trying to teach some about the game. My 19x19 is used about 95% of the time.
I'm thinking...

OK,thanks!
I was considering the yunzi ones because I though they were much harder than the glass stones.
If they are almost the same I'd go for the cheaper ones.
Are the ceramic ones harder?

ing stones (sold by yutopian) are probably the most indestructible -- if that's what you're looking for

My yunzi stones have been dropped quite a few times and they are resilient - one or two have chipped over time, but I've never had one shatter.
