Classic Go footage!

Post by Tami »

I was surfing for Japanese fan sites about Yamashita Keigo, and found this instead - a treasure trove of go videos from the last 15 years.

With this link you can watch Fujisawa Hideyuki in action, versus O Meien, ca 1998.

Have fun!

Thanks for posting this. I didn't realize that there were so many videos from the NHK tournament on Youtube. Due to the restrictions on length if you want to see the whole game you have to find and watch the other parts but still a very nice thing. I noticed that a game between Sakata and Otake is also available.

Another series of videos might be of interest, namely Go Seigen lecturing on his 21st Century Fuseki ideas. Ogawa Tomoko, familiar to L19x19 readers as the author of the Ishi Press/Kiseido book The Endgame is Go Seigen's assistant. Each segment begins with some material on Go Seigen's life and other go events. Here's a link to the first segment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io7sZXEk ... re=related It's all in Japanese so ... But people might be interested just to hear the sound of his voice. The second segment has at the beginning a lot of photos of the Shin Fuseki time.

Thanks to gowan for the Go Seigen link.

Straight off, two very interesting things - he emphasises the importance of [whole-board] 'balance' and he seems to prefer the word 'kata' to joseki, which reflects on another current thread.

The way he illustrates the power of junction points is beautiful. We amateurs get so entangled in small, messy things; Go Seigen demonstrates that it can be clean and simple if you take the vital points.

I had the 21st Century Fuseki book, but this seems easier to grasp somehow.

I love how the presenter in the Go Seigen video can hardly contain her excitement at working with the master. Fantastic stuff!

By the way, am I the only one who thinks Go Seigen sounds a bit like Master Yoda? I can't help it, his voice is perfect! I keep hearing things like "go to the center of the gravity's pull, and find your planet you will"
My name is Gijs, from Utrecht, NL.

When in doubt, play the most aggressive move

I don't know about Yoda, but I do think Kuwabara-sensei's voice in Hikaru must have been modelled after Go Seigen's.
