For years, I kept a shortcut to the KGS application on my Windows Quick Launch toolbar, and clicked on that whenever I wanted to connect to KGS.
Since the server move, when I start up the computer and click on the shortcut in the Quick Launch toolbar, I get the pop-up that it's searching for the latest version, and every time it downloads the 1.4 MB of version 3.5.4. I have satellite internet, and so have bandwidth caps. While 1.4 MB doesn't seem like that much, it's still irritating. I thought the point of downloading and installing the thing was that you'd only have to do it once.
Also, every single time it installs a shortcut on my desktop without asking me. I figured perhaps the shortcut was to a different location, so I deleted the one in the Quick Launch and replaced it with the one on the desktop. That doesn't help; Cgoban still downloads itself.
What do I need to do to get things to work properly the way they did before the "u[grade"?

Re: KGS no longer working properly on Quick Launch
Update:
I made certain I had the DNS correct, using the URL instead of the IP address, rebooted, and tried to open up Cgoban using the desktop shortcut (which, by the way, had the same path as the one in the Quick Launch). It tried to re-download the whole 1.4 MB of version 3.5.4 again.
Extremely irritating for those of us with bandwidth caps. I guess I'm going to have to look for a new SGF editor if every time I want to edit an SGF file the damn app is going to connect to the "cloud" and re-download itself.

Try uninstalling CGoban. And if that doesn't help you can try clearing the java webstart cache entirely.
In the worst case you can download the .jar file manually. Then you need to update manually in the future, but considering how rare updates to CGoban are nowadays this doesn't sound like too much work.

A possible solution: download the .jar file at http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jar and run it locally.
I use this since I can't use web start on my university's computers.

Re: KGS no longer working properly on Quick Launch
My general quick fix when something isn't working with cgoban is: Open your Java control panel and in "Temporary internet files" click view. CGoban is probably there under applications. Delete it with a right click, then go the the website and install it again. You can then replace the old shortcut with the new one. I have xp, but apparently it also fixes some broken win 7 installations too.
Patience, grasshopper.

Re: KGS no longer working properly on Quick Launch
Thanks for the advice. For the time being, I've only taken Sverre's advice to download the .jar file directly, since testing to make certain the problem is fixed involves rebooting, which is more of an inconvenience than the direct download was.

Re: KGS no longer working properly on Quick Launch
Here is a page at Sensei's Library that has some help for some common problems starting CGoban 3 for Java Web Start after a client update. It assumes you have Java 1.6.http://senseis.xmp.net/?HelpStartingKGSClient
When you have a shortcut, you can edit it and add the "-offline" switch. Doing so might prevent the "autoupdate" feature from working for future updates.
