Will the KGS Android client be available in Amazon App Store

Post by Tofu »

Just like the title says, will the KGS Android client be available in Amazon App Store? At $199 the Kindle Fire seems like an interesting device, but it would be a whole lot better if I could play go on KGS with it without having to hack on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Any idea if this will be available?

And just to repeat the summary: At this time I don't have a definite plan on putting KGS in the Amazon store, but if the kindle sells well (and all signs point to that happening), *AND* the kindle doesn't get the Google app market added, then YES I will sell KGS through their market.

So once you see kindle selling decently, go ahead and buy it; KGS might not be available right away, but within a few months of it being a definite success, KGS will be there one way or another.

I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my Kindle Fire. If I can't access KGS on it, I'll be quite sad. Jumping on KGS was one of the things I was really looking forward to, since it's really the only thing I can't do on my iPad already.

It won't be there right away. I'm still so nervous about amazon app store. Other developers have been very vocal about their horrible experiences there. For me it's even worse; when I update the server, I *must* update all customers, which means that I can't just pull out of the amazon store if I have a terrible experience there.

But all the same it is looking like it will be a good seller. I'm going to give it at least a couple months, see if there is any indication that the google market may come to the kindle. If not, and if the kindle does sell as well as reports indicate, then I will have to put my app there anyway.

Are there non-store distribution mechanisms for android for more technical users or is it like the iPad where the only mechanism (outside of testing) is through the app store?

Android isn't hard for non-store distribution, but the payment is what is tricky. If you want to go paid then one of the stores is really your only option.

Maybe you don't need to put it on the Amazon app store. If there was a way to buy the apk directly, there are directions for side loading it to the Kindle Fire from a desktop.

Getting the apk is easier for a free app, I put mine (anDGS) on my website for easy down load by anyone without Android market access. So anyone looking for an Android app to play on DGS or review/edit any sgf file on a Kindle Fire, check out anDGS. It would be interesting to hear how the side loading worked for anyone.

Looks like it didn't take too long. I'm not sure what it means by "missing apps".

mdobbins - but if I'm handing out APK's then I have to manage the sales and copy protection myself. Even if the Amazon app store is is awful to developers as the complainers say, it's still better than handling all that myself!

oren - This is great news. Not because I'm going to tell potential customers to root their phones to get my client, but because if this practice becomes common it gives Amazon more impetus to put google market on there by default; if they put the market on, after all, then they'll get a share of the sales.
