As a normal member, you cannot delete accounts. An admin can.
But what is the point? You can just walk away and stop using it.

The reason that users can't delete their accounts is that it takes away from the continuity of the threads and can in essence destroy useful archives especially if the user was a heavy poster. It is the default programming of the forum not a setting we admins just decided to turn on.

Yeah, it's a rare case, but I would think the best practice would be to leave the post and remake the name as "some former user n".
I recommend doing this sometime after you write a pamphlet concerning the optimal method for clipping your toenails.
