Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
It's been a while since I defaulted my way to winning the Kuchinashi tournament. I'm wondering if it's time to have one again. The tournament in the past, IIRC, has been a tournament restricted to a kyu range with teaching games with dans given as prizes. I'm wondering if there are any kyus interested in this. If so, we can try to find a good band that fits a big enough number of kyus to make it worthwhile. I'd be willing to organize this. I won't be at all busy until CMU classes start again on the 16th of January. After then, I'll have enough time to be an absentminded but good natured TM. I'll also be willing to offer reviews of any tournament games along with a couple of teaching games for the winner.
Any takers?

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
I'm in.
I was actually thinking about starting this thread after the holidays.
There have been two previous Kuchinashi tournaments. (Kuchinashi is a reference to the name of the flower the legs of traditional gobans are modeled after)
The first one was for 7k-9k. The second was for 4k-6k.
I was going to propose this one be for 1k-3k. Although, if people from across the sdk range are interested. Maybe. We could have 3 divisions and 3 separate brackets.
As it's been done before the Kuchinashi tournament is a chance to play serious games (1hr plus 1:00x3 byo yomi) against set opponents of similar strength. Each round would be best of three. And there is a loser's bracket.

^This. Are you willing to help me get this organized? I'm not too good with the whole being diligent and responsible thing.

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
Might as well make it 3-1k for the sake of consistency. The biggest problem I remember from last time is rounds dragging on so long that people weren't free to play anymore. Is there a good way to prevent this?

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
perhaps deadlines, and if the deadline for the match is missed, the match that the winner would play in is defaulted, and neither player would move on. Of course there should be some way for someone to move on automatically if their opponent just isn't able to play.

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
Redundant. I can help out with organizing.
As far as the rounds dragging on, I think the main problem was that last time each round was set up as a best of 5 series. If we downscale to best of 3 and maybe best of 5 for the final i think it would help move things along.
But I think we should also have a 2 week maximum for each round.

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
I would propose that all rounds before the quarter-finals be best of one. Then quarter-finals and semi-finals best of three, with a best of five final.
It depends on how many people are willing to participate, though.

I would recommend best of 3 until the finals which are best of 5. One of the staples of this tournament is a chance to play a few serious games with the same person.

Re: Kuchinashi Tournament Time?
It'd be nice if the information was organized somewhere. I tried running a league tournament for a go community that I'm apart of on KGS (that unfortunately didn't work out too well) and posted results, biographies and tournament information on a free Wikia website. It'd be cool if there were a L19 Wikia or something.

I have nothing but time for the next 1.5 weeks. Let's see who all joins in the next week. On the 11th I'll set up first round matches if there's enough interest.
