I'm playing several games at once in littlegolem and DGS, and I've found that I play a lot more aggressively (going for the kill, or at least trying), when playing turn-based. I find this odd, because my reading is nothing to fancy about, and my rival has a lot of time to discover and repel my killing plans. But anyway, I just try to kill a lot more than real-time.

Is your playing different in turn-based servers compared to real-time or real-life?

I haven't had much success with turn-based go - I prefer to get my games done in quick order.
However, the only chess games I have ever won were turn-based, and that was due to me taking my time to think through the possibilities, and consider each move.
At the moment, my go is suffering a little from my haste, so maybe it's time to try some turn-based games to remedy that. Which do you find is the best server/software for turn-based games?
I wonder if you are going for the kill more because you have more time to analyse which groups are weak, and where you could attack them, rather than making judgement calls like "there's a chance I might kill it, but there are still big moves elsewhere"

I don't see THAT difference. What I've experienced is that I play hastier and more sloppy on turn based games.
May seem strange, with all the time, but I used to have multiple games running and playing when I had some small time left to spare, thus I'd forget about some things about the games and make moves when I had my thoughts elsewhere.
My favorite turn based server is DGS

I play on both DGS and OGS. I play slower on turn-based but not always better  .

The best way to describe my games on turn based servers would be "like blitz in slow motion". The trouble is that I play moves when I am tired, distracted, half asleep etc etc.

It IS fun though :-)

I do notice that more of my games end up with big fights on DGS/OGS. I'm not sure why that should be. I think that long games can reward thick play and killing because you have to be really precise to kill. I'm not sure that's why I fight though.

I tend to play quickly in what seem like obvious situations, then get stuck. When I'm stuck, I won't play "blitz in slow motion" but will keep coming back to the position until either a) I feel up to doing serious analysis or b) I give up and play the easiest move.

I'm more or less with what hyperpape finds. Even if I play "slow" blitz, as almost all of you, I'm far more aggressive in turn based

I dont have the time or patience in general to play in live games. I dont like waiting for the other player or feeling rushed. Fortunately there are many servers offering turn based Go. Wuzheng.org, dragongoserver.net, gomatches.com, itsyourturn.com, among others. So I can sign up for a game and really work on my reading skills. The games play out over months, so every move really counts. I know I am fortunate that these servers are available. I think if I were playing a live game I would be much much more aggressive. I have more time to think on correspondence so I try to think long term. I dont really see the point in playing live now that these correspondence servers are around, for the reasons mentioned above, additionally I find that the people monitoring kiseido go are generally highly annoying and the hassle at waiting to try and find a decent match is generally a waste of time. If there is a player who wants to play on a correspondence server you click yes, then make the first move, or wait. Very very convenient and you are likely to benefit more at your skill because you will waste a lot of time if you screw up.

Concerning turn-based servers, I like OGS a lot, it has all the nice features that you expect (thanks topazg!!)

However, I am sort of lacking the patience that is required for playing turn-based. Which is a shame, because you get into the game in more depth and get to think more about your moves. Which is a good thing because after all, Go is a game where thinking is important. :-)

Also I dislike the commitment that you have to give when you start a game. I just finished a turn-based game, my first that was NOT ended by resignation ... won it by 0.5 points :-). This game was started around June of last year, which means it lasted for over 6 months. :o

Regarding differences in playing style, I feel that there are
1. More tenukis in comparison to real-time and
2. For some reason (at least in my games) the center is of greater importance.

I just started playing on a turn based server (DGS) and I do not feel comfortable with it for a couple of reasons. First, I do not have the patience to see the game to the end. I already feel like resigning the games I am playing just because I do not think I can finish them. Second, I actually feel like they take too much time to play because I keep thinking about it all day. This is a problem because the point for me is to take less time of the day. I know this is my personal problem that it occupies my mind too much and of course does not necessarily apply to anyone else. Third, I feel like I am reading poorly and too much. I end up reading through so many positions I get distracted from the best play. I also end up reading a particular move too deeply and ignore other possibilities. So, I think I am playing worse in some ways.
On the other hand, I am playing better in some ways and learning some new joseki. Basically, someone played a move I was not familiar with and I had to study it a lot. This gives me the opportunity to do that, and I learned something new that I probably will not forget. It ended up being a trick move in the book of trick moves, and I had to figure out how to respond. The player did not follow a common joseki or a common trick joseki. It made for an interesting exercise.

I think I change strategy more in turn based games. Malkovich games are the only turn based ones I play, though.

I find it ridiculous that a couple players need more patience to perform a correspondence game than a live game. For me, its the opposite. I cannot stand sitting there while the other person is thinking about what to do next, its really really irritating. The nice thing about correspondence is you dont waste time on the other person thinking. Its all about you and your timing. You take as much time as you need, then you walk away. This also allows to get the very best moves, unlike a live game where you may not have enough time. If there were only live games available, I would probably quit playing because like I said other people thinking to me is highly irritating, unless there was a component like in chess boxing for Go, in which I could smack the other player around after each move.

I'm probably equally aggressive in turn-based games and real-time online games. The thing is, I fall behind early on and have to try to fight to catch up.
