Okay, I was wondering what a standard White response to Black 1 would be for the Joseki. White protects his cutting point by forming a tiger's mouth, and then black makes the one-point jump--that makes sense. White keeps his stones connected, while gaining potential territory on the side, while Black protects the corner.

Note that without the handicap stone, white might play at a. The tiger's mouth connection is solid, but a bit slow.

Something else to consider,

There are lines where that Cut IS played (because black chooses to tenuki etc..)

But then black can choose to just let white have a couple of stones and take 4th line territory:
