Hello from Indiana!

Post by Aidoneus »

I am a new Go player. I used to play a lot of correspondence chess (snail and later email with IECC--from ~18** to 23** in 6 years before I became inactive) but it eventually got to feel like I was playing half my games against a computer. This on top of needing to stay up with the latest opening theory before reaching some independent thought in the middle game.

Anyway, I recently retired as a math editor--or really semi-retired, as I still teach a few math classes at Purdue--and I thought that learning to play a new (or very old!) game that has not been so exhaustively analyzed would be fun and good for my old brain.

Right now I am "preparing in secret" before starting to play at KGS. ;-) Which I plan on doing in one month when I close out this semester. I hope to give many others some enjoyment in drubbing me my first 50 games this spring/summer.

Welcome!

In a weird coincidence, I was just visiting Purdue and Go came up in one of my conversations with a faculty member there (someone from the philosophy department, though). I even wondered if I'd somehow spurred them into an interest in Go when I saw the thread title.

Greetings, and Boiler up! (=

There used to be a few grad students there who played, but I don't know if they are still around. Presumably with the large number of international students around there are some who may play but meeting them, and convincing them to take extra time away from their research and other commitments may prove a challenge.

Hello to you! I'm also living in West Lafayette and trying to stir up a weekly Go group. We have played the past few Tuesdays in the Union at 7pm (maybe you've seen us) but it is tough to get new players.

Anyone who would like to get together is welcome to come or send me a message on here! I won't be there this coming Tuesday (3/10/15) but should be there in the weeks following.

Maths nerd detected!

I hope you enjoy the game like many maths nerds before you.

It's always the board game, maths, computer science (isn't that just applied maths?) or anime people. Or almost always. Too few linguists imo.
