Over 100 vintage NHK tournament games (YouTube)

Post by Jujube »

I remember reading something about old NHK games so apologies if this has been posted already!

There's some channel on YT that has over a hundred (and counting - last upload was 1hr ago) vintage 100-minute-long recordings of Go games featuring Ishida Yoshio, Rin Kaiho, Otake Hideo, Cho Chikun, Sakata Eio, and loads of other great players. The games are pretty entertaining. It's worth checking it out. (TV show, so Japanese audio).

(No affiliation with channel).

This is a goldmine! Thank you for finding this, Jujube :D

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Seattle Go Center might be behind this. I do recall that they had a giant collection of old VHS tapes containing NHK games on their bookshelf. Maybe they've gotten around to digitizing them?

I recoiled in shock when the camera cut to Ishida Yoshio casually sparking a fag about 5 minutes in to the game. How times have changed.

No, I've been through those before and the quality was worse and completely disorganized. Someone else is doing this I think.

considering NHK had the Shuko documentary removed for copyright infringement reasons, how does anyone see this lasting?

That's usually why when I find these things, I don't post them up. :)

FYI: Jonathan Hop (AGA 4d) (link to his SL page) has begun translating those videos to English, the first one is up:
(after clicking the “play” symbol, click the white “CC” button to see the subtitles)

I have been watching these and playing the game out on my board recently. Does it bother anyone else how they cut away to the commentators who are exploring all sorts of variations from a certain position while there is the mad clicking of stones being laid in the background? Then because I don't understand most of the speech, I don't always catch on to when they start to catch up with the moves that were played. When they cut back to the board, I am 10 moves behind. Come on NHK of 20 years ago! Get your act together and give us one of those little windows that shows the board while to commentators are gabbing.

They have fixed that in the more recent broadcasts.

[Emphasis added] I'm not sure that NHK can fix that problem! :study:

Looked at the 40th NHK Cup this evening. There are 49 games and I found the SGF for 22. In half a dozen cases both SGF and video are available.
See http://homepages.cwi.nl/~aeb/go/games/g ... index.html .
Additions and corrections are welcome.

Not sure if you were joking or not but this part "Get your act together and give us one of those little windows that shows the board while to commentators are gabbing" has been added. You can see the live board while the commentary is going now.

edit...

I just realized I misunderstood. I like they added the live board finally but the poster is asking for a separate overlay. Now I got it... :)

I've tried studying pro game records in the past, but this is much more exciting!

Too bad there's a no-smoking policy where I live, I would've liked to follow the pros' example
