Cho Chikun abandoned Ryusei final game

Post by macelee »

Shown on yesterday's Japanese TV, Cho Chikun abandoned the final game of the 24th Ryusei tournament. Yuki Satoshi was the winner. The game was actually scheduled one August 6th. Cho's wife was critically ill so he could not play.

Amazingly, Cho was the winner of this event in 1991 and 1993. He still managed to enter the final 22 years later, beating many strong opponents on his way, including Iyama Yuta in the group stage.

I believe Cho Chikun's wife passed away about a month ago (maybe August 7th).

Incredibly sad situation, but definitely impressive that he was able to make the finals.

It didn't bother me. If Cho were known as an escaper, then it might have seemed nasty to me, but since that isn't the case, the comment seems more like a joke intended to lighten the bad news.

Btw, the use of the word "abandonded" as used in the thread title sounded inappropriate to me, because it implies in a non-joking way that Cho callously disappointed people by not playing, but I assume this connotation was unintended by the op. I likewise do not assume the escaper joke was meant to be hurtful, so I don't see much reason to feel offended.
Patience, grasshopper.

Interesting. I didn't feel offended, didn't see it as hurtful - probably it was just a mark of immaturity - but still thought it in extremely poor taste.

Applicable here is the old definition of a Scottish gentleman as someone who knows how to play the bagpipes but doesn't.

And in case anyone got the wrong impression, Cho didn't abandon the game. He signalled his intention to default in advance and it was the organisers who decided not to reschedule, out of sympathy and not as punishment.
