If you are looking to play on a go server, Pandanet works well.

I would personally recommend Crazystone/Champion Go over Smartgo. Smartgo Kifu is $20, I believe. I didn't buy that one though, I bought another version of Smartgo. I find the AI to act strangely at times; playing totally random moves in the opening. Crazystone seems to have better AI overall and I enjoy the interface more for quick games. Smartgo feels a little slow at times.
Another app I like, which is free, is LittleGo. The interface is nice and you can customize a lot in regards to AI behavior and strength. It allows you to upload games into it (say, from DGS) Oh, Dragonstone (DGS) is another app to get if you haven't yet. It's a way to play people online in a turn based style. Kind of like words with friends. I like doing this if I don't have time to sit for an hour or longer and play a full game.
I would also recommend Pandanet for iphone, or Mac. Another Go app I use on Mac is Goban. The AI is decent, and you can also connect to servers like KGS directly through the app and play using that board.

Could it be that you mean SmartGo Pro, the precursor to SmartGo Kifu?Fadedsun wrote:[..] I bought another version of Smartgo. I find the AI to act strangely at times; playing totally random moves in the opening. [..]

I think that's the one. I paid maybe $10 for it? It's not bad, but I didn't feel it was worth the purchase in the end.

Re: Best software/app to play go across Mac, iPad, IPhone?
I have both but can’t comment on differences in strength since I only use them for Tsumego (SmartGo Pro on an ancient iPhone, SmartGo Kifu on a newer one and the iPad) and occasionally for recording a game.
Maybe you could just ask Anders Kierfulf? He seems to be a responsive developer.
You may also want to check out the beta version of SmartGo for Mac (free 15-day trial, license includes both OS X and Windows version).

Try these go server apps for iPad/iphone:
- PandanetGo for IGS
- WBAduk
- Tygem
- KGS on Mac is available like on Windows.
On iOS is available through AlwaysOnPc app (but probably better wait for new clients as KGS has been opened for 3rd party)
Web based:
- OGS
- playok.com
If you want try some Tsumego apps - look at my signature
Cheers
