Did I really lose this game?

Post by Lg314 »

First of all, I know this site is mainly for 19x19 play, but I have been practicing on a 9x9 board to better grasp strategic play. Anyway, the attached game shows that I lost by 3 points (I was black, Komi=6). The top right corner is seki - which means I should have won... Right?

I don't see any captured stones, so I am just counting on the board.

White bottom left has 11 plus 1 captured stone, which is 12. There is also one point in the top right, so that's 13 for white. Komi is 6 so that is now 19 points for white.

Black has 9 points on the bottom right and 6 points on the top left, so that's 15 points. I think the one point on the top right also counts, so that would be 16 points.

So, yea, white wins by 3.

Edit: TBH, I am not sure about that black point on the top right, but I guess the computer counts it. Maybe someone can explain whether it counts or not and why. If it doesn't count, though, then it would be white win by 4 points, so either way white wins.

Well, if you counted White's point, then you should count Black's point too.

But generally, eyes in seki don't count.

so minus 1 from black, and minus 1 from white, and white still wins by 3 :)

GoQuest uses Chinese scoring, so eyes in seki should be counted. Also, Komi is generally 7. lg314, what's your count of the score? it's easier to find where you went wrong if you tell us what you're thinking. :-)

Yes, it is Chinese territory scoring. I thought that any stones in seki are not counted as points for either player. And you were right, Komi is 7. Therefore, negating the top right-hand corner, wouldn't black have 38 while white only has 25+7?

Stones in seki still count for both players. Some scoring systems don't count the eyes in seki (Japanese scoring), but here it doesn't make a difference; each player has one eye so they cancel out.

So by my count, the total score is 42 black (stones + territory), 38 white (stones + territory) + 7 komi = 45, hence white plus 3.
