I've tried archiving some of the malkovich games, but the archives end up too big, because of duplicate images and extraneous files. I wonder if someone could put out a script that would do the archiving, removing these duplicates?

If not, any ideas on how we can get the archive size under 256 KB?

I would like to see a post with tips about how to effectively manage the technical details of playing a Malkovich game, e.g., the "show diagram source" trick, what free SGF software is good for exporting compatible diagrams, etc.

Phelan - I've archived all the games without including the players' avatars (for some reason DownThemAll! is doing that as I download webpages, but as it turns out, that's convenient). It works for keeping most archives under that limit, which I actually didn't know existed. The big brother one is still to big as a .zip, though I haven't actually tried to upload it yet. However, bzip2, rar, and 7z compression get it down well (especially 7z - it goes from 378.3kB zip to a whopping 97.2kB 7z!). My only problem is that these take a bit more technical skill (or in 7z's case, a download) to open. Still, given the amount of programmers on here, they should be able to handle it, so I may upload it in one of these formats anyway.

As for go editing software, there's tons of them, but I use the KGS client available for download at http://www.gokgs.com/download.jsp (note: this is the downloadable client - it does more than the web client).

Ah, yeah, that should cut down on the size. If it is still too big, you could split it into two archives.
I have 7zip installed, so I'd have no problems with that, but I think most people would.

I think in most Malkovich games people just copy the diagram from some other post and edit it by hand.

What I'd like to do is write a script that uses the quote feature to get the actual comments as written by the players/observers so the diagram images don't have to be included at all. It would take a lot of work, but in theory it could be pointed at any thread and just archive the whole thing, lickedy-split. It could even transfer them over here post-by-post, as-is. The posts would all be under the same user, but they could be prefixed with the original poster's name in big bold letters.

Maybe I'll take a sick day from work...

I couldn't read the thread Malkovic #15 Alakazan vs MagicWand on GD. Is this game lost?
And is it supposed to be resumed shortly?

It shouldn't be lost, since there was a GD database backup. It isn't available right now, though.

As I'm about to start the teamovitch, a question for you all:

Is editing each diagram by hand still the most common way of posting lots of diagrams?

I apologize if I missed this simple answer. Are these games played on this forum or is there an "OGS" type platform? Thank you!
Also, love the concept however I find it hard to find a game I can relate to with so many SDK/Dan games out there. Would it be feasible to split Malkovich forum in to >SDK and <SDK games?

The games are played on this forum. And while I can't answer about the splitting(not being an admin after all), I would like to bring up this sticky on the malkovitch page

The initial conceptualization of the Malkovitch format was based on a desire to see the thought process of stronger players. So perhaps its a good thing there are so many SDK/Dan games out there :)

That said I like your subdivision idea, but answer me this. How would you place a game between a 1 dan and a 12 kyu for example?
Also >SDK and <SDK leaves out all the SDK :lol:
