A Soldier's Poem
Transparent promises have led me astray,
and slowly I approach a grave.
This day has long been one for mourning.
Purity for insecurity is slowly let loose.
A film of mist seems to rise from the ground,
and caress my numb cheeks.
On this winter morning my heart is somber
while my head is filled with empty air.
A solitary black pebble-like stone rests on my palm
like a lonely soldier forgotten in time.
There are a few dents that mar the stone
along with a single crack.
This stone lost its spirit long before I could cry
while fighting in wars I could never understand.
I kneel before the tombstone with a full heart
remembering the songs my master sang.
Clack!
The black stone is finally put to rest on the tomb
as the last remnant of a time long gone by.
The last resounding cry of the stone echoes in my heart
ravaging it and pulling the strings apart.
A drop of crystal clear liquid lands upon the last soldier
seeping into the cracks as more drops join it.
Overhead the clouds give way to a single stream of sunlight,
and it bathes me in a warmth that is no stranger.
The last solider will forever sing his songs to the angels
as he joins his brothers and sisters in serenity.
I rise like the wounded wolf but with a head held high
knowing this soul has finally been to rest with a final...
Clack!
