Playing with firewall

Post by PROVOK3 »

I am unable to use my computer at home due to certain issues. I am trying to play go through a public library in any server possible. Anyone know a way to do this without bypassing a firewall that stops me from connecting from any server? I tried Yahoo games, KGS, IGS. I am computer illiterate, so this might be impossible.

You'll probably have to do turn based go.

Well, you have to ask yourself if you want to bypass the firewall or not. If you don't want to "bypass the firewall" (eg. go to blocked areas), and they've blocked them, then... You're out of luck.

But if you want to access KGS, for example, you can try using http or ssh tunneling. This worked for me at a library where the port was blocked.

You can try to connect to KGS via a browser.

This still requires the kgs port to be available to the computer. It doesn't work behind a firewall. You can get to the webpage on port 80 but never get to the server which is port 2379.

In my case, I used http tunneling, but senseis library has a discussion about ssh tunneling here: http://senseis.xmp.net/?KGSIssueSSHTunnel

Have you tried asking the librian?

There might be a process for getting permissions added to the firewall. But if so surely this has to start with the library patron telling the librarian "I'm blocked from this or that site". Like the default is "disallow" with each exception made on a case by case basis once the librarian (or the librarian's data support) determining that the site is OK.

Such a peaceful solution! Why didn't I think of it?

Solution

Post by PROVOK3 »

I found http://goshrine.com/. It is free, real time, and it allows you to play though firewall. Great for when in school. The only downside is that there are little players, but if one is really desperate there are bots to play. eurogoserver might be another solution although I don't think this goes through firewall.
