stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
hi - i am quite new here, hope i am making no mistakes in creating new topic...
i am playing on kgs quite a lot, suddenly stone clicking sound was missing.
i re-installed JRE, java web start, cgoban client - but same problem.
i hear warning sound at byoyomi and sound when game setting are changed but no stone clicking anymore...
that's very pity.
i am running windows 7.
sound settings inside kgs and java installation correct.
may be someone has an idea what i could try to solve the problem? thanks.

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
are you listening to music or videos or any other audio applications at the same time?
often on Windows, some applications will "steal" the audio drivers for exclusive use, such that other applications can no longer produce any sounds.
This is a limitation of Windows, so recommend that you only do one thing at a time

yes - true - i am listening very often to music on the computer...
... but when i start playing on kgs i've turned off the music before of course...
thanks for the answer!
strange is that i am hearing the other kgs sounds - only stone clicking missing...
i've found in the internet that this problem arises if you don't use "sun's java", but i guess i am using the correct java...
... and linux users seem to have the same problem sometimes, but i am not running linux...

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
and there are different types of sound (I forget the technicalities) -- like audio sounds (music) and effects (alerts).
if I recall, in Windows you can turn off one without affecting the other.
so did you turn off your Windows effects alert sounds (like the loud ding when clicking the wrong thing, etc)? Because those will be the same as your stone clicking sounds.

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
Yes, the stone clicks were the first sounds added to KGS, back when Java was young and the only audio system was very primitive.
Later as I added more audio I would always use the "latest and best" java audio system, and because Java audio was always screwed up they kept writing whole new systems, so now there are three different audio systems that KGS uses. I would have expected the old systems in java to pass through to the newer, but no that is not the case, instead they use totally different underlying system APIs in some cases, so you get weird things where you hear the clicks but not the KGS Plus audio, or the warning beeps but not the clicks, or whatever. Sigh.

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
Hi, I have exactly the same problem, the sound work with "passing" or "confirm a challenge", but there no sound when putting a stone on the board.
I have KGS+ and I use Windows XP.
The same problem happen in both web and non-web cgoban.
I think I use the latest version of Java 7, since this is what I got when I open Cgoban... Thought, if I go in control panel and go in java setting the make "java console show up", then when I open cgoban3, it say I use :
I don't think I have any other program that use sound...
Anyway, it's a very annoying bug, hoepfully this can be fixed.

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
Couldn't fix the problem - so i am playing with the extra-handicap of "no-stoneclicking-sound" - a bit annoying in fast lightning games and byoyomi...
I am working with mozilla firefox here with this one almost all the time ...
On another computer with the same programs just running with internet explorer only - everything is working perfectly regarding stone clicking sound ...
Probably just a matter of chance, i guess...

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
It would be interesting to know which users who experience this problem are using Java 1.6 and which are using Java 1.7. To check your version of Java, open a command console (terminal) and type this command: java -version
If you do not have a shortcut to open a command console, you can enter cmd from a run dialog.

Sanity is for the weak.

my result are the following three lines after "C:\Users\(name)>java -version":
java version "1.7.0_01"
JAVA (TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_01-b08)
JAVA Hotspot(TM) Client VM (build 21.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing)
(Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 32-Bit)

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
I noticed this "missing sound" issue recently on my Mac (10.6; 64 bit; java 6)
I usually have the sound turned off on my work laptop, and usually only log onto KGS from my personal Mac (no issues on my personal Mac -- and I don't recall those values at the moment)
weird -- didn't expect to have this problem on my Mac

Re: stone clicking sound missing - windows 7
I just installed Java 1.7 for Linux 32 bit, and I don't have KGS sound.

Re: stone clicking sound missing - Linux OpenSuSE
Since I lost the stone click sound by running the client under Java 1.7, I went back to Java 1.6.
I just installed the newest version of OpenSuSE (12.1), and I cannot get the stone click working under any version of Java.
