Playing By the Book: Do you use a Joseki Dictionary?

Post by Charlie »

With my recent exploration of various Go servers on the Greater Internet, the idea of playing with a Joseki Dictionary open has been on my mind. In the past, I have only used such a thing for post-game reference.

Instinctively, using a Joseki Dictionary for a correspondence game seems acceptable, using one for a real-time online game seems cheesy and using one while playing across a real board seems completely out of the question.

What do you think? What is generally considered acceptable?

Additionally, is it even useful to use a Joseki Dictionary during a game?

I read this is quite popular, and that there is even a joseki reference app on one of the servers?
Anyway I don't think that for example on my level it would be really uselful. Firstly because most of my opponents often play "not joseki", and secondly because the dictionary doesn't say which joseki is useful at a certain whole board situation...
