). That out of the way, of course 26 is a lousy play. How should we judge such things? Let's consider alternatives. What if White played K16 instead of R3, Black played S4, and White played C14? How would you think the situation would compare to the game? Black has an extra 18 points or so in the lower right corner and White has XX more points on the upper side. XX is roughly how many do you think? This is the essence of evaluation. When considering any move, we have to ask, "Compared to what?" My "what" is K16; what's yours and how do you evaluate the resulting position?
