1001 GoGoD games for your Coffee Break #6 (14 January 2013)

Post by TMark »

I hope that this meets your expectations. I doubt that my efforts will have the historical authority that John brings to all his writing, since I will be focussing more on what has caught my eye and my imagination while working on the database. I might grab some data from his crib sheet from time to time.

A little while ago we were given the loan of 30 year’s worth of the Igo Kansai magazines, published by the Kansai Ki-in and I have finally been able to work my way through them at the end of last year. One game stood out and has now become a firm favourite. It was played in 1974 by Kubo Katsuaki (born 1958-02-07) and Hotta Yozo (born 1957-02-12) when they were both 2d, in the Kansai Ki-in Oteai, but it was not actually published until 1989. Both Kubo and Hotta went on to become 9d and are still playing professionally. However, even pros will want to have some fun occasionally and that is the point about this game. I am always on the lookout for yet more mirror-go, Onadare josekis and games that start on tengen and with this game I got all three in spades. Four identical Onadares and then the game ends with a quadruple ko! I also keep an eye out for Chinese fuseki, mini-Chinese and “Move 8 is bad!” games (of which more later).

Go is a fun game! Share and enjoy!

No aji, keshi, kifu or kikashi has been harmed in the compiling of this post.

Makes me want to log on to KGS and play a mirror Go game right now.

Also, it gives me a useful strategy to make a no-result if I ever end up playing someone who mirrors my moves.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.

What a game! The quadruple ko was the perfect finish, and I certainly didn't see it coming.
