Re: Examining what it took me to get to shodan
To me that's close to blitz! At those time settings, I struggle to finish a game within main time.
Ah I find this very interesting. I was always under the impression I was a relatively slow player, both from my interactions with other players in live games and on servers. Where do you normally ...

Re: Examining what it took me to get to shodan
Are there any particular moments from your journey that stand out to you right now?
Around October 2018 I was sure I had this whole shodan nut cracked. I had by accident stumbled on to a play style that was winning me games at a rather high rate. Basically I'd play 3-4 stones and try to force ...

Examining what it took me to get to shodan
After 10 years (nearly to the day) I have finally managed to get promoted to 1 dan on KGS. This might be part of KGS's ongoing rank rebalancing, so we'll see if it sticks, but still, this is the first time I've gotten a legitimate dan rank on KGS (a few 1dan?s not withstanding). Getting stronger at ...

"Delusions" are a real problem for go AI systems. AlphaGo had similar issues.

1k even game
This was an interesting game where I feel like both of us made a lot of mistakes. In the end I won by a pretty comfortable margin, but there were large swaths of game where I'm pretty sure I was losing.

Did you read? I said r8 not r6. Yes, he read. And mis-read an 8 for a 6, honest mistake.
He even quoted the r8 in his reply.
Simply pointing it out would've sufficed.
The snarky " Did you read? " is uncalled for.
I would be careful trying to assign tone/intent, here. You can just as easily read ...

Re: The impenetrable wall at 6 kyu
Don't be timid. Attack aggressively with a tight pincer at L16. That's what you built up the thickness for, right? It doesn't help the corner, but white will probably be running for a while, and you'll probably get sente to deal with the corner if you feel so inclined. N17 is a sort of halfway move ...

Close. Try recounting and see if you get a different number. I usually have to count 3 to 5 times before I actually get the same number twice

Just count the score
There's a lot of resources on how to count the score, but usually it's framed for the middle game or end game. Which makes sense; that's when you need to know the score. But counting an unfinished game is difficult, especially if it's close. Is that half point ko that threatens to kill your group ...

Re: 1k vs 2d, half point loss
Thanks for the thoughts
yeah figured I'd get sente to attack either the top or bottom.
My thinking was taking J17 now was a wishy-washy move that doesn't really pressure either white group strongly. But maybe by setting up a large scale split attack on two white groups it's superior to a severe ...

Re: Batch export SGFs
Basically I want to do as little effort on this as possible Transcribing all the problems in to SGF format is already exhausting, and fiddling around with typesetting to build a SGF-to-something converter isn't my idea of a good time.

Batch export SGFs
I'm translating problems in the Gokyo Shumyo to SGF format, as I haven't been able to find these anywhere in that format with a permissive license (unless anyone knows of a source?). My goal is to process each problem's SGFs in to 8 different PNGs, for each orientation and color combination. Maybe ...
