Re: Kingo

Ignoring the "captures have to be made with kings" option for the moment, I see two extreme-case strategies resulting:

1. All moves are king moves by both players, in which case the game deteriorates into capture-go, or

2. All moves are non-king moves until the very end of the game, at which point ...

Re: The go of Venus and Mars

Here's food for thought:
maybe men are more competitive than women as a function of human mating behaviour.
As an example: Male birds that sing the most beautiful songs (or construct the sturdiest nests) have the best chances of getting laid.

In that sense, the male domination in highly competitive ...

Re: L+1 with two hane

It still would surprise me if the answer was seki.
That is not a seki, that is dead .

Also on the sensei page it says black can force an ungodly multistep ko for white. Kos like that (or a 10k year ko, which usually ends up seki) are considered "almost alive".

I have to trust a pro over SL ...

Re: Solar System: To Scale

Reminded me a bit of this.
Also, in Germany many cities have "planetary paths", which is the solar system to scale (usually at a 1:1 billion ratio) along a footpath. And even though the whole solar system is about 6 kilometers at that ratio, single planets are mostly marble sized.

Re: Converting Tygem games to sgf on Mac

So there are two Windows programs that can do this and one Android program, and no Mac?
there is a gokifu.com perl script linked. I haven't tried it, but I would guess it works.
And I'm pretty sure perl comes pre-installed on Mac, I would be shocked if it weren't the case. You need to know how to ...

Re: Converting Tygem games to sgf on Mac

Is there a reasonably easy way to convert game records to sgf?

see http://senseis.xmp.net/?GIB

Also, I found a windows guest in virtualbox to be a much better solution compared to the wonkyness of wine, but whatever floats your boat.

Re: Confused about scoring

I'll invest in a better program, or even play online.
there are better alternatives that are free. Check out pachi , fuego and gnu go . The first two engines are fairly strong on smaller boards and it will likely be years before you can beat them evenly, if at all.
I recommend pachi, it even has ...

Game 2: can you explain why R13 is bigger now than C2 (I disagree)
I wish I could, but I was a bit confused as to what was the biggest move. (I assume you talk about the position just before white's r14 invasion)

Given the annoying endgame around b10 and the fact that black isnt completely alive ...

Two losses, comments appreciated

Hey, here are two games I played on tygem. I already made some comments on what I thought were the biggest direction of play mistakes, but if anybody can point out additional ones that'd be great. Generally, I seem too focused on capturing small stuff on the sides while my opponents take a huge ...

Re: Go Club Forums: Kick out Kaya, add OGS

I think the futility of adding an OGS subforum has been discussed before.

Apart from that I agree, though. Kibitz is a breeze, coordinates are highlighted on the board and more than that, you can just share entire variations in chat (!!)
The review tools are also decent, there's byoyomi countdown ...

Re: terminology - broken ladder/ladder works

Does a pro actually reommend playing like this?
$$B

$$ . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . X O . . . |
$$ . O 6 X . X O . O . |
$$ , . . 4 5 O X O . . |

This seems too good for white.

Also, with the ...

nobody can help you if you dont tell people WHAT kind of error you get. I just tried the homepage and got an error message saying that their SSL key was too weak (?) or something,

so I changed the url from https to http and viola, it ...

@emeraldemon
what if white passes with 3 and claims it's a seki with both groups in atari, since black has a bent4 in the corner if he captures?

Re: cute 3x3 problem

Please explain what you mean by stone counting.

You count the stones on the board. Whoever has the most at the end of the game wins.
In this example it should be equivalent to area and probably also territory scoring, but I was too lazy to keep track of prisoners in the variations.
