Re: Review: The Theory and Practice of Semeai
Sorry for unearthing this thread after a long time - I have just dusted off this book from my bookshelf in order to refresh my memory. In chapter 3 (group with eye vs group with no eye) I'm now stumbling across the problem positions No. 4 and 9 (which are actually the same positions just with black ...

Re: Game review request (IGS 17K)
I still don't understand why is a small move? Doesn't that secure territory more than 2 points? With you are slightly enlarging an already fully-alive group of your own by maybe ~ 5 points. It does not put any pressure on white, i.e. white has full freedom to continue with whatever he wants (that ...

Re: losing most of the game and then sudden win
If you check this game with Leela Zero, you’ll find that Leela sees white in advantage almost throughout the entire game. While it may on the first glance look better for black (due to the large “moyo” or whatever in the upper half), there are obviously a number of flaws/weaknesses in blacks shapes ...

Here are my variations on Q1 and Q2. If they are wrong/incomplete I would be glad about corrections.

I would disagree and say that both players were more or less equal regarding the direction of play, but the game was rather decided by some important tactical details.

Re: WBaduk client problem
Yes, wbaduk's english client has a somewhat strange user interface. I would recommend the following:
On first startup after installation, a settings dialog pops up. I strongly recommend going into the "flash" section and checking every box. Checking a box means to turn the respective flash sequence ...

Re: Can amateurs have their own style?
I think it works much more simple: As most people don't like pondering too much about their mistakes, they are interpreted as a personal 'style', maybe like this:
⋅ Making overly cautious moves, giving away sente --> calm and solid style
⋅ Cutting in hopeless positions ...

Re: To kill or not to kill. That is the problem.
At move 238 you mentioned that it’s one move too early. But actually, it’s (locally) necessary right now. Can you see, why?
Edit: On a second glance there is even another “side way“ making the capture unnecessary again.

Is this a 6-stone handycap game?
I would have played the same as Tryss, on first instinct, however it can get a bit tricky:
