Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Still deciding what to do with my life, and some thoughts come to mind.
1.) My emotions are volatile. Sometimes it’s interesting and fun to study go, sometimes not.
2.) Whether I like go or not, I have limited time to study each day.
3.) Progress in go can still work if I study it every day.
4.) Combining #1 and #3 means that, to make good progress in go, I’d be enjoying my free time some days, and not enjoying it other days.
5.) Probably have to work through that if I want to see results.
I’ve been exercising physically for awhile now, and I suppose it’s similar; some days I want to exercise, and some days I don’t. Is my life better because of exercise? Probably.
Studying go may have similar benefits - I’m exercising my brain. There are many days to do that, though. I could go really deep into one area, or I could study a different topic each day, as I pleased.
I might just end up watching YouTube or something in that case, though.
Another problem with go is that my emotion is still tied to a win or a loss. So there’s a lot of volatility there.
I guess I could study often, and just play a bit.
I’ll think about it a bit more. No posting for awhile, because I have to drive to work, and we established in another thread that driving while posting is a bad idea..

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
I decided to focus my free time on go. (I stopped playing the trombone, ...)
1. The time spent with go is never lost.
2. A man ever walks.
3. Go Seigen looked quite happy, when in front of a go board at a very high age.
I did work out for me. The quality of my go time improved and I enjoy go even more.
No fear, there is still kind of a balance in my life (family, profession, communal politics, ...)

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
This is getting unweird (ie manifesting an inability to see into the future). Perhaps L19 should change it's name to "Gaaa!", as in:"Gaaa..!! i've made another dumbass blunder - how could i not see that coming?!". Or as in Go Amateur Addicts Anonymous, since no-one here uses their real name anyway.
Exercise is for the birds - who needs it?! What can they do that i can't???
As for Go Seigen, he set a very bad example, worrying so much about his own Go that he lost all his hair, and even on his deathbed still telling other people to fight each other.
Imagine there were no Go boards,
And no Go gurus too
Imagine all the people
Living, for Today
You may say that i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
omg... wait a minute... where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Gone to tsuji, everyone
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever,
Learn?

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
And my weekly AYD game is in.
Today's opponent was none other than the infamous Calvin Clark of the forums.
He beat me.
Here's the game record:
At no point did I feel ahead in the game, but it was fun, I guess.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
that sounds like a great idea, seriously. it's what i'm doing with my golf, and am thoroughly enjoying it. One of the nice things about study is that it doesn't hurt when you stuff up.Kirby wrote:I guess I could study often, and just play a bit.
Fred Astair was strolling along 5th Avenue, when a tourist, puzzled by the map he was holding, politely stopped Fred.
"Excuse me Sir," said the tourist, "Can you tell me how to get to Broadway?"
"Practice" replied Fred.
Kirby, what's wrong with your game? Why do you think you might need to study? What do you think you are missing?Gary Player wrote:The more i practice, the luckier i get
Maybe the rest of us can learn something from your mistakes - for sure, i'm no good at learning from my own, as i make them over and over again. Just the other day, i coolly let opp live in all 4 corners, and then live in the middle...
PS if it's any help, the Moon Goddess says Black 1 is wrong.
PPS white 14? ugh... white 18 = maybe it's reverse sente, but it looks like a lost opportunity - go west, young man, where it's wide open!

It was great to play you. If it's any consolation, two days later I completely botched my game against your previous opponent.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
My weekly AYD game today was against Jon Hop. I know him from back when I was 5k - we both went to Michigan.
Here's the game.
I didn't realize that the game was a half-pointer. It was a lot closer than I thought.
Nonetheless, another loss.
That's the bad news.
The good news is, I decided to play more go. We'll see if I really do.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
First non-AYD game in a *long* time.
I was taking so long that my opponent escaped, and I won by forfeit. I think I was ahead until the very end, but then recent developments made it anybody's game.
Here's the game record.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Selected highlights.
1.) Unclear whether pushing white up like this is good for me. I feel good about getting definite corner territory later, but on the other hand, white gets a lot of central influence.
I can't see a move that makes me more comfortable, though.
2.) I understand my intention here, but if I'm going to play on the right, I feel I should just be more normal. The left side is also getting big.
3.) Unclear what my best move is here, so I guess it's good by my opponent.
The best I can think of is this: Still feels unsatisfying, though.

If White had answered 1 below with 2, how would you have handled it?

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
I didn't think about the ladder that much. I do seem to recall thinking about a potential cross attach, and thinking, "well, i'll just capture the stone then in a ladder". But it looks like the ladder doesn't work.
I don't know what's best from here. Maybe a ladder breaker in the top left, or maybe I cut him anyway and have two weak groups... Or maybe just K8?
Not sure.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
By the way, it was my intention to play a game today as well. I really want to get back into a rhythm. But I felt so tired this evening, that I didn't think I could really play well.
I don't wear my fitbit every night, but sure enough, the data seems to suggest that I didn't get much sleep last night (5 hours, 20 minutes). In general, I should probably aim for more sleep, but it just isn't happening...

Somehow, I got a lot of sleep for Valentine's Day. Why? Again, not sure.
I guess I should probably think about going to bed soon...
